The city of Shusha, founded in 1752 by Karabakh Khan Panahali Khan, has undergone a rich development path and played an exceptional role in the cultural and social-political life of Azerbaijan and the entire South Caucasus.

This city was able to retain its unique historical appearance and environment and is one of the important centers of the historical-cultural, social-political life of Azerbaijan, being home to many renown personalities. At the end of the 19th  century and the beginning of the 20th century, Shusha became the musical and cultural center of the Caucasus, and was called "Little Paris", "the art temple of the Caucasus", "the cradle of Azerbaijani music" and "the conservatory of Transcaucasia".

In the 70s of the last century, the National Leader Heydar Aliyev initiated many projects and signed decisions to speed up the development of Shusha city. Since that time, construction works in Shusha have expanded, and critical steps have been taken to perpetuate the memory of our cultural figures.

If we look at the nature of Shusha, it is an area with rich flora and fauna. The highest peak of Shusha with a fascinating nature is Mount Big Kirs (2725 m). Here, the highlands are covered with subalpine and alpine meadows. The Jıdır plain, neighboring the city was historically hosting horse races and is the only and large flat area of the city. Karst caves in Dashalti village, "Shahnazar" cave and Dashalti canyon located near the city are among the geological natural phenomena of Shusha.

By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the city of Shusha was declared the cultural capital of Azerbaijan and in recent years was hosting many international events and festivals.
